The National Arts Council (NAC) develop and support art by providing fund to the artists and art organisations in Singapore. To get the funds, both parties must fulfil at least one of the following requirements.
Type of grants
1. Creation grant
This grant is given to an artist who has a strong track record in its achievement and production. It supports the creation, adaption and re-development of distinctive artistic content. This encourages the artist to come out with a new creation of artwork or incorporate digital technology in revamping the existing artwork.
The grant is capped at $50,000 per application which can be used to cover the expenses during the creation and development process.
2. Market and audience development
NAC aims to use this grant to help Singapore artists to reach out to its audience in both the local and international market. With the grant, they can use it to do market research, promote different art productions and development material to engage sponsors and audience.
In addition, they can use the grant to cover their expenses in other countries during their participation in festivals, exhibitions etc.
3. Research grant
This grant is to facilitate the enable organisations and artists to carry out research to understand the issues and challenges that the arts and culture sector is facing. Besides researching the different concerns of the sector, the grant also supports the preservation and documentation of the art scene in Singapore such as traditional arts and arts in communities.
With the research grant, it allows the artists to upgrade themselves and their artwork with knowledge of the upcoming trends, methods to captivate the audience etc. It cover 100% of the qualifying costs and is capped at $50,000 per financial year.
NAC came out with different types of grants to sustain the art scene in Singapore. It allows artists and art organisation to express their art ideas freely. This grants that are offered by NAC help to ease the artists's concern about the production, marketing and research cost. With such grants, it encourages more artists to join the art scene and come out with new ideas to attract both the local and international audience.
Besides the art organisation and artists, NAC has reached into school to provide them with funding to support the art programme. There are 2 schemes available.
1. NAC-AEP
Through this programme, it provides all students with access to quality arts education experiences. There are more than 1000 art programmes available comprising show performance or workshop.
2. AISS
It is a partnership between Singapore arts professionals and schools to develop art experience that deepens students' engagement through arts.
With such programmes, it exposes students with art at a very young age and it is critical for the art sector. These uprising children might be the next generation of artists in Singapore.
